Waiting to Run Hot
I like to think I have pretty decent BR management - I definitely don’t want to be playing mid/low stakes my whole life and am not afraid to take a shot, but I set aside a certain portion of my roll and wait until I have enough to lose before I try to jump to the next level (I use the Kelly Criterion for this - If you don’t know what this is you should familiarize yourself with the concept).
I have been trying to jump into the $5/10 NL games in Vegas twice now, and it is incredibly frustrating. Both times, I built my roll up to $20k+ and set aside $5k to blow in 5 buyins for the $5/10. Every shot I’ve taken at $5/10, I’ve either gotten sucked out on or coolered. I can not put into words how frustrating it is to feel that I am probably good enough to beat this game but to run just so bad that I can’t just stay at $5/10.
I lost about a grand today when I flopped top two AQ against bottom set 77 on a raised pot PF and rainbow flop against an unknown player who just sat down. I was stunned; I felt like I was in a trance. There goes another shot at moving up. I also lost JJ against KQ AIPF against a rich maniac raising any two the last shot I took in the $5/10 game. I have less than 200 hands at this level, but my winrate has got to be something like -50 BB/100 hands. One of these times I’m going to run good and stick and start making like $60+/hr. That would be nice. Until then, back to the grind of $2/5 I guess…

dude, i know how you feel. i took my shot this month and am crawling back down again.
1 hand i had the nut flush draw, the fish had 4,6 for the straight flush.
2 hand in a multiway pot vs 2 fish i got it nearly all in on the flop vs a flush drawer who had the same top pair lower kicker. he hit his flush on the river.
