The Donkey Test:
I have been playing a lot more cash games lately and been have success. In the past I usually donated my money when playing cash games. There was a thread on cardclubs.net about Donkeytest so I took the quiz. I scored 109. When I looked at the questions for a second time I realized 1 or 2 errors for sure. So I feel pretty good about the score.
So I scored well, but did not always do what I thought was correct. How dumb is that? So I started to follow my own advice and have had success.
Here are a few of my learning’s:
· When in doubt bet.
· Do not go all in pre-flop with less then AA or KK, I am not good enough to fold KK pre-flop. Lottery poker is a tough way to play and eliminates all skill.
· If you have AQ there is a 92.7% chance that a K will come on the flop. (that may just be me).
· Players are not very tricky, if the check they usually have nothing so bet and take the pot. If the call slow down, if they check raise fold. In the long run you will be ahead.
· If the 3rd card to a flush comes out and the checker suddenly bets he has a flush. (its amazing how often I use to call not believing people).
· Any “A” especially “AK” is over valued post flop.
· Starting hand selection, I learned to open up my starting hand selection. The key to the cards is to be higher or close together. If the cards a close together and middle cards they really should be suited. If they are far apart run away.
· Position is the most important item. The earlier you are the better the hand you need. Being last to act gives one the freedom to make a loose call to try to get lucky.
· NEVER limp early position to see a flop, unless you are willing to call a raise and play your hand out of position.
· If you have several limpers every time you and are on the button, One time raise the size of the pot, no matter what cards you have, you will usually take it down, if you are called bet ½ pot post flop. If you are called again and have to show down the hand, your image will change and you will get less limpers next time.
· If you are going to play a middle pocket pair raise from early position, it gives you a chance to take the pot down, it also can get you heads up where the pair is the favorite.
Again I know that I did not invent the wheel with these, but you maybe amazed how poorly I played cash games in the past. And following this basic template has really helped my game.
If anyone wants to take the test it would be fun to see what we all get.
