That Was The Week That Was

Made an ignominiously early exit in yesterday’s Saturdays with Pauly PLO tourney. Was actually at Poker Kat’s table for my brief time in the tourney. Had an unfortunate early hand go down in which I had limped from LP with Q-Q-x-x and saw a cheap flop with just the two blinds. Flop was Q-8-4 rainbow and when both blinds checked I decided to check behind and see if I could pick up more than just the 60 chips in the middle. The turn was another eight, giving me the big boat. Both checked again.

Actually, what would you do here? We’re talking first level, blinds 10/20, I have 1,350 or so & my opponents not much more. Figuring neither of my opponents had much of anything as yet, I checked again. Probably not the correct move, now that I think about it . . . . Anyhow the river brings yet another eight, putting three of ‘em on the board. One of the blinds bets out 60, I raise to 160, and he repops 560 more. (I think these totals are correct – sorry, have no hand history for some reason.)

Crap on a cracker! It’s possible he could have some random pair and think he’s good here, but really that’s wishful thinking. Besides, I’d played a couple of the Pauly tourneys with this particular opponent and so knew he in fact had a clue. But I stubbornly call, anyhow, not being able to bring myself to fold my big boat. Sure enough, he has the eight, and I’m down to half my original stack. Ended up sticking around into the third level before deciding to push my last 550 or so with a flopped nut-flush draw and inside-straight draw (neither came).

Haven’t been posting here too often lately, though I am reading everyone & following yr various travails. And, of course, like everyone else I’m following the progress of our bud bigbamboom as he motors down the SuperNova Highway. Now I heard the other winner, Simon Noel, on last week’s Two Plus Two Pokercast, correct? I haven’t missed bigbamboom (Steve Cooke) being interviewed have I? If not, I do hope Mike/Adam mention how Steve is blogging over here at PokerSift when they have him on.

When the new year began, I made a decision to try to publish a post each weekday over at Hard-Boiled Poker. Previously I had tried to maintain an every-other-day sked, but the fact is, people tend to read blogs during the week (from work, most likely) a lot more than on the weekends. So far, so good. We’re ten weeks into 2008, and I’ve managed to keep up the pace. Am even occasionally throwing in a weekend post over there, too, when something comes up.

Meanwhile, I’ve discovered it to be difficult to come over here and regularly post as well. It occurred to me that I could start coming around each weekend and give a quick recap of the various items that turned up on HBP during the week. And perhaps I could add a little something over here, too, once in a while.

So, the week in review:

Monday: “The Search for Unambiguous Proof of Poker Playing Prowess” concerns last week’s Saturdays with Pauly & Chris “Jesus” Ferguson’s triumph in the NBC Heads-Up Poker Championship.

Tuesday: “On the Poker Haters” speculates about why some people find poker so objectionable. I settle on three reasons – psychological, moral, and ethical.

Wednesday: “Little Did He Realize” reports Jonathan Little’s ouster as a Full Tilt Poker rep.

Thursday: “Withdrawing Online Funds – WWJD” interprets what it means to see the face of “Jesus” whenever one withdraws money over at FTP.

Friday: “Avoiding Becoming ‘Ring Sour’ & Some Friday Funnies” tries to apply a concept from dressage to poker & adds on some links to funny 2+2 threads.

Early Saturday morning I also passed along the news that “Cheating ‘Scheme’ Confirmed at Ultimate Bet.” Beats me why anyone would want to play at UB or AP.

I hope this idea to do a weekly recap doesn’t seem too presumptuous. (An old BBC TV ref. in the title, btw.) I figure you can pick and choose what looks interesting to you (if you hadn’t see it before). And, like I say, I’ll try also to keep posting other stuff here now & again as well.
