Q. UB or Not UB? A. Not UB.

Yesterday I posted something over on Hard-Boiled Poker regarding recent troubles at Ultimate Bet. I used to have accounts on both Absolute Poker & UB, but following the “superuser” cheating scandal at AP, I hastily pulled my moneys off both sites back in October.

In the post, I mentioned a few Two Plus Two threads I’d been following regarding various complaints with UB. (I didn’t even really get into those recent rumors about another superuser-type scandal perhaps brewing on Ultimate Bet — if yr interested in that, here’s where that thread begins.) I talked about a few issues, including the “wait list freeze” problem the software has, as well as the rampant abuse of unlimited all-in protections (something that folks have complained about for years on UB).

The main reason for the post, though, was to share a new problem that someone had discovered. Apparently, it is possible for a two people at different locations to log on to Ultimate Bet using the same username/password. Yes, you read that correctly. Multiple users can play at the same time under the same name at Ultimate Bet.

Click here if you want to read the original 2+2 post. To summarize: A player wanted to sweat his friend who at the time was 6-tabling. He opened the software and realized he’d actually logged in under his friend’s account — apparently his friend had recently played on UB on his computer. Checking the cashier confirmed he was indeed logged in at the same time as his friend. He then opened up a few tables of his own and started playing as well under his friend’s name.

Reading through the subsequent thread, one finds other posters confirming that at Ultimate Bet logging in simultaneously from two locations is indeed possible. Some point out how they’ve known about this horrendous glitch in the software for some time.

Many of the posters express their dismay at this problem and point out how it provides further reason not to play at UB or AP. However, some posters — a good number, actually — are arguing that the glitch doesn’t bother them & in fact isn’t really a concern at all.

Is this a debatable issue? You can tell where I stand on this one, but I’m wondering if anyone else has any opinions about whether it matters that two people can use the same username/password to log in from different places at the same time on an online poker site. (I can think of a few reasons why it does matter, but I’m curious what others think.)

Shamus,

I read this on your blog yesterday and am shocked. Not surprised since UB is owned by AP but this glitch seems to have been around since before they merged. This is a serious flaw and hopefully will be rectified. Thanks for the info.

I’m not sure what sort of practical use this flaw could be for cheaters, but I think it is a concern that this shows a lackluster approach to security at UB. I would think this is a signal that there are other security flaws over there.

I guess one practical cheating application is if you could find out the players password and watch his hole cards on one computer while playing another account at the same table on another computer.

Today Iggy’s getting emails from folks confirming the UB glitch.

Cheating…I hear about it all the time and makes me sick. 2 kids in different locations on MSN….JJ Prodigy….Absolute etc.

Now to hear that you log in one username account - hmm - makes me wonder if they can even catch those with multi accounts.

Nice post, I hadn’t heard about this. Ugh, don’t get me started on Absolute Poker and their related sites - I’m afraid this doesn’t surprise me at all. I cashed out of AP long ago and I won’t be going back to them or UB no matter what they offer.
