Praise for a WSOP rule change

It was recently announced that the WSOP would be instituting an excessive celebration rule for the 2008 series. The new rule states, “Excessive celebration through extended theatrics, inappropriate behavior, or physical actions, gestures, or conduct may be subject to penalty.” Although I have never played in a live setting against people who I don’t know, I am ecstatic at this rule change. Ridiculous antics from the likes of Hevad Khan and Humberto Brenes have made televised poker nearly unbearable. Hopefully this means the coverage will be more about the poker and less about what will appeal to the lowest common denominator.

In other news, Shannon Shorr, who was widely praised for his decision to return to school to get his degree before going back on the tournament circuit, has dropped his classes and will play at the LAPC. This is exemplifies two things. First, it shows how difficult it is to juggle poker and school because Shorr had to completely leave the poker world to pursue his degree. Second, it shows how difficult it must be to leave the tournament poker lifestyle for any extended period of time. Shorr said in his blog that he would still like to get his degree at some point. I would bet against it. It seems like he just can’t quit the poker life.

I have been experiencing this same difficulty in juggling poker and school. Obviously, school is first priority. When I take a heavy course load, like I am this term, it makes it tremendously difficult to find any time to get into a poker rhythm. It’s more like a session here and a session there rather than a regular schedule like I had over the summer or winter break. Every time I play a little, I never know when I am going to play next. It’s quite a bummer, but I’m dealing with it. Back to the grind.

I love this rule. I honestly was always hoping some big cowboy would get up and lay a licking on Hevad Khan. He is an idiot. I feel for guys like Doyle Brunson and TJ Cloutier who just shake their heads at the juvenile’s in the WSOP.

I don’t mind Brenes because although irritating he is at least doing it in jest. He is in a different category than Hevad Khan.

Either or - good rule…..
