Restealing on the flop in PLO

In small multi-way pots that are checked around on the flop, steal attempts from last position are incredibly prevalent in low stakes PLO games. It’s almost like an unspoken agreement–as long as everyone gets to steal every once in a while, no one really pushes back. Some players make the move way too often, and it seems foolish to not repop them.If you know a person is stealing light, you can check raise from early position even lighter–even in multiway pots. When used prudently, this move rarely gets any resistance. It’s a nice little trick to add to the arsenal, especially when you’ve got a player at your table who is stealing more than his or her fair share of the tinnie-winnie pots or if the board looks scary (and like one that you’d be more likely to check raise).

I also try to look for places to block the last position steal move by stealing myself one seat before the last spot. These little pots add up and make it look like you are playing loosely, which will cheaply buy you some action when you really do have a big hand.

Some people might argue that these tiny pots aren’t worth a resteal attempt, but my success rate tells me that they absolutely are.

Had this in mind today as I sat down at a PLO25 table. Very first hand, was in the BB and got one of those trash hands with two deuces and not much else. Lots of limpers & so I saw the flop for free. Flop came A-J-2. Checked all the way around and the button put in $1 (pot was $1.25 or so). I put in my Amarillosb reraise to $3. Folded back to him and he quickly responded with a pot-sized re-reraise ($10+ more). I let it go.

I might have had him, but his bet made JJ seem a lot more likely than two pair. Didn’t work out here, but my reraise definitely gave me needed info, and perhaps saved me some cabbage on the hand.

Glad it got you thinking. I usually cultivate a pretty tight table image (if that’s possible online) before trying the resteal, but you’re right it is a good move for information on a button raise at any time in a game.
