On the road to the SuperNova
So where to begin. Poker has treated me pretty well lately. I devoted a great deal of time recently relearning the game - I’ve donated a lot over the years and think I am ready to shed the donkey/fish in me and start to be known as a bit of a predator - at least at the penny games…lol. The Bankroll is definitely on the rise…and I hope my last is deposit behind me.
Poker has taken on a whole new chunk of my life now. I think “professional” is stretching it but I am making an hourly return for all my play. I usually log on at 7:30 p.m. and play till about 1 or 2 a.m. depending on how deep I go in the tournament du jour. I also am focusing a lot of time increasing my cash game and SNG play.
The hardest part of staying a winner is trying to increase the number of tables I play and the $$ levels I am at. Its gone pretty well. I started play .05/.10 NL and in no time won $50.00 in about an hour. That was over 4 tables…Isn’t that crazy. People at the micro stakes just donate money to you. I still find Multi Tabling tough to focus on. I like to really be in each hand, and try and absorb as much as I can about players. Using Poker office has helped but its still a whole different game. Within minutes I had hit about 3 sets, so I know without Multi-tabling…that just wouldn’t happen.
I moved up to the .10/.25 game and won 5 buy ins…so it was up from the “micro” stakes to the “low” which has been some time since I’ve played up in the nosebleeds. With my Cash Game - my bankroll is not really at the point where it can take multiple hits, but against wisdom - I sat down at a .50/1$ table with $40.00 and play ninja short stack poker. I called a min raise with 77 in the blinds and hit the flop beautifully with AQ7. I had a gut feeling my opponent had Ax and that any kind of bet would bring him along. Sure enough, I pot raised - he reraised and I shoved.
His call would put me +$40.00 after about 1 minute I was ahead of the game. Still, I knew I was pushing it, as I took my hands aggressively and played smartly. As soon as I made my first mistake about :30 minutes in, I was ready to hit and run and took the money. I have since dropped a few buy ins, and as per my “bank roll rules” have dropped all the way back to .5/.10. So far so good, working on climbing back up the ladder. Still lots to learn on Cash Games. My goal is to get to a 1/2 level and be a consistent winner.
In addition, I am keeping up my learning on MTTs as I deepen my knowledge base using PokerXfactor.
Overall, I have been fairly pleased with the video’s - you have to sort through the information. The MTT’s are pretty straight forward and you realize that its not rocket science to win. Sure - they make all the right decisions, but basically stay out the way of monster beats, and play good cards and position. Is there any other way to win.
On the site - there are so many videos of SNG or MTTs that you start to get lost - watching 2 parts of one, 3 of another before realizing you didn’t quite get all the information in. Still - it has been very rewarding.
This watching and learning is on top of reading - or rereading many of the books in my library. The first book I wanted to refocus on was Super System - the bible. I think I a am a little confused and Doyle’s advice is somewhat more aggressive…then my usual reading material. The final challenge is puttin these cumlative works in the right perspective….cash game or tournaments….aggressive vs. conservative…all in the bank roll requirements.
Doyle plays in a different world, labeling 10-20 NL as Low level, so its pretty funny. But I can see how being very aggressive and hammering on those small pots, and then gambling with the right cards can make you a big winner. I lost 2 buy-ins right away with this aggression - getting my A5 of spades all in on a spade spade, Ace draw. I ended up losing to an AK when my flush didn’t make it and my kicker out kicked. 5’s aren’t a great kicker now are they…I battled it back to even, then on the plus side only to drop the final pot of the day. Still, I feel confident my cash game is much improved. I like my little scam where I play LAG the first few pots, even willing to buy in short and lose it all to get the “first impression” in everyone’s heads, then after that its solid tight poker - and there will be blood….lol.
Finally, I submitted Hand History to mentor Adam and Mike of Rounders fame. I sent him my 3$ rebuy tournament, where I finished 129th out of 3700. I also sent him my 3 hours of cash game grinding and a SNG. I think he has got his share of my Hand Histories. Interesting to note, that I went through my Poker Office stats, and the two hands that consistently lose me money that should be +EV are Ak and KQ. So lesson learned.
Back to the tables tonight - I could use a big break through.

Thanks Greedo, I appreciate the support and your “poker” comments - my bankroll could stand the staking. But for sake of pride I can’t do it.
Here is my counter offer - a great deal for you..lol.
I’ll play on my dime tonight, and if I win - I’ll buy a pair of nice - I mean nice - running shoes. The kind a man would be proud to fence with.
But since you were kind enough to offer, and I really do appreciate the input - I’ll post the complete tournament on a viewer for all to check out - and I’ll put my interesting hands up tonight.
Then I will look forward to your input and see how well I’ve done.
I saw the tough beat you took with QQ in the 1/2 cash game…tough beat.
Tonights the night - the only game is at 7 p.m. Poker Stars…and my gut tells big win.
I got to your blog through blogcatalog.com. Your postings fit my personal interest, and therefore I am looking forward to your further writings. Thoughtful and well written.
I just transfered you the cash… and was going to agree to your 50/50 top ten finish… but now I see you edited your post! I guess your wife let you in on the fact that I have been cyberstalking your poker play.
If pride is an issue… no problems, just transfer the money back. The real objective was to get you to step up your play to a little higher level.
Good luck tonight either way! If I am around, I will sweat you out a bit.
lol…cyberstalking my pokerplay. That’s funny.
Actually Greedo - I put two and two together - with the Fencing and Poker. She had mentioned you were a big poker player…and not many top shelf fencers around.
No worries, I’ll ship back the $ and appreciate the offer.
I look forward to you sweating me and hope to catch you on line. My MSN is bigbamboompoker@hotmail.com and I’ll have it on for the poker tonight.
I’ll also post my moving and grooving up here on Pokersift with key hands, wins and losses.
We’ll see you tonight….

Sounds like things are going well for you so far. It sounds like you are learning some good lessons. I have found that my best results come when I focus on one game… and become an expert in it. As so many times correct moves in tournaments are not correct in cash games. Just like a deep stack requires different moves than a short stack in a cash game. an intere♠ting po♠t about exa♣tly t♥at ♠♣enerio ♥ere: ♥ref=\"♥ttp://♠neakygree♦o.blog♠pot.♣om/2008/02/worl♦-we-begin-exa♣tly-♥ow-it-en♦♠.♥tml\" rel=\"nofollow\">♥ttp://♠neakygree♦o.blog♠pot.♣om/2008/02/worl♦-we-begin-exa♣tly-♥ow-it-en♦♠.♥tml
I am surprised you didn’t take me up on the offer I made in your last post. It is still open if you change your mind.
