My Poker Frustrations (and a little bit of venting)
Well, 2008 is not off to a good start for me, personally. In 2006 I had moved from NYC to St. Pete, FL for a job. A year and a half later the job has turned out to be one of the worst mistakes ever.. the only good thing about it is the people I work with (in the art dept) and the actual work we create. Everything else… not even close to being good. I believe everything happens for a reason. Moving down here has given me the chance to take my poker skills to the next level. There is actually a lot of good poker in FL and, as it was mentioned in CardPlayer (last month?).. the games are good. There is definitely money to be won (with some adjustment to these players).
Unfortunately, the curse is that with the struggles and frustrations from the job.. I haven’t had the bankroll to play live. I’ve been able to play in one tournament this year and I went out on the bubble. I’ve been dying to get back out there. My life is taking new direction right now though. Since my situation down here is not good and there aren’t any other jobs for me in this area (and I really don’t like FL anyway) I’m moving in a few weeks. The great news is that I’ll be moving to LA. Next week, I’m off to LA to look at some apartments and go on a few interviews… and of course, play some poker.
I can’t wait for this move. I’m very excited to be off to a city that has a lot of great things I miss about NYC with a bunch of things I missed that NYC didn’t offer. I’ve been wanting to move to LA for awhile. I will have a lot of options for jobs (I’m an apparel & textile designer) and I will get to play in great casinos and improve my game.. Also, I will have that great close proximity to Vegas. So there’s no question.. this move is the right move for me.
One of my biggest frustrations is that with the “practically non-existent” bankroll I’ve been playing online instead of live. I really hate online poker.. I go in with the best hand and I constantly get sucked-out on on the river. It’s amazing.. but it’s even more amazing that these idiots call with such below marginal hands. Instead of wasting my money online and getting upset with the micro-limit players.. I’ve been reading. I’m working on Sklansky’s Hold ‘Em for Advanced Players. I’ll post about interesting things I read.. rather than from the online play. Unless I get really angry and need to vent about some moron then you’ll hear about it. CHIMPS and AIPS were fun though. I’ll definitely play those.. Oh, that reminds me. CHIMPS is tonight. PLO? I think. Cool. See you guys tonight if you’re playing.
Also, next week I’ll post about my trip to the LA casinos…
