Midterms, midterms, midterms

Midterms and poker do not go well together.  Whenever I fire up Full Tilt to get in a session, there is a little voice in the back of my mind saying “You idiot! You should be studying!”  I always end up giving in to that little voice, so not a ton of poker has gone down recently.  Needless to say, my $75 bonus was not cleared.  That’s kind of a bummer until I think about the fact that if I were to play enough to clear the bonus, I probably would have lost at least $75 at the tables anyway.  Either way, I break even.

I pre-ordered Harrington on Cash, which I am thoroughly excited about. It will undoubtedly close up some leaks in my game, such as limp-shoving the button pre in a 6-max with 97o (don’t ask how it happened because even I am not too sure). Can’t wait!

I think congrats are in order for recent WPT champion Gavin Griffin. He became the first player ever to take down a WSOP, EPT, and WPT title. This probably isn’t as impressive as it seems because the EPT and WPT haven’t been around too long, and it’s just a matter of time until others do it. Still an impressive feat. Gavin has done a lot for breast cancer awareness, such as dying his hair pink, and he should be commended for it. Nice hand Gavin!

One thing that I have been trying to determine is whether or not I should be focusing more attention on getting better at limit hold em. Does anybody have experience with NLHE and LHE at micro levels? If so, which one is more profitable? My experience is pretty limited to NLHE. I have heard that LHE has a higher variance and is much more math based. Some of the plays are a lot more automatic because of the higher emphasis on math. If that is the case, it would seem like multi-tabling would be easier in limit, making it a more profitable online game. Is this the case?

No, multitabling in limit is much more difficult. In limit you tend to see a lot of turns and rivers and showdowns on the hands you see your flop with, so more decisions. Also, a tight 14/8 game won’t do it, this day in age in LHE, you have to open up your ranges and play much more speculative hands, which results in even more decisions.
Yes, LHE has more variance in relation to the winrate, which is always under 5BB/100, no matter how good the games are. But in relations to the blinds, NLHE has more variance.
It is the game of choice for bonus clearing, though, as there is a sweet spot right around 2/4 - 3/6 in which the average pot size is just right to maximise the return.
Whatever you want to do is fine, but don’t do both at once!

Awesome. Thanks!
Are LHE games softer than NLHE games online?

pretty soft up until .5/1, but NLHE punishes mistake more gravely, so if the game is really soft, then your winrate in NLHE will be higher. Around 1/2-3/6 the bonus grinders appear, which are not so much fun to play against, but still profitable around 1BB/100. At 5/10 there is a barrier (which I have not been successful in breaking), where the LHE pros appear. Those games are certainly tough
