In Like a Lion, Out Like a Lamb
Actually March came in like a lion, grazed around a bit like a wayward calf, swung back and forth like an orangutan, laid down for a while and hibernated like a black bear, got spooked like a horse after a car backfires, then went out like a screaming cheetah. Hard to fit all that in a subject line, though.
Such are the fluctuations one can endure when engrossed in an online poker bonus chase. Today I sit with a little over 1,400 VPPs, meaning I need to pull down less than a hundred today and tomorrow to claim that Silver Star on PokerStars.
I’ve been kind of stubborn, really, about not playing above my limits or multi-tabling too much in an effort to gather extra points. Have stuck primarily with my regular PLO25 game, LHE $1.00/$2.00, and Stud/8 $0.50/$1.00. Have noticed I earn a FPP/VPP about once every two hands at the LHE 1/2 game, once every three hands at PLO25, and once every four hands or so at the Stud/8 .50/1 tables. (A high roller I am not.)
I know a lot of folks get into trouble sometimes chasing bonuses, losing more at the tables then they stand to earn from the bonus. I’ve been there, for sure. But I also have noticed the last few times I’ve had a bonus to earn — say, when Full Tilt offers that random one every now and again — knowing that I’m “earning” something even while folding hands has actually increased my patience at the tables. I suppose that’s an effect those who get rakeback enjoy, too (I wouldn’t know — I have no rakeback deals on the sites where I play).
Anyhow, here’s what happened over on Hard-Boiled Poker this week:
On Monday, I wrote a post called “Response Time” in which I described one of those crazy-ass PLO hands where I ended up feeling forced to gamble. Had aces, flopped top set, then had three other players want to put it all in against me.
On Tuesday, I wondered whether Harrington’s new volumes on cash games would contain any concepts that came close to being as influential as has that idea of “M” from the Harrington on Hold ‘em tourney books.
On Wednesday and Thursday, I shared a two-part “PLO Puzzler” (part 1 & part 2). Some might not have found the hand that much of a puzzle, really, though it was for this jingle-brained sap.
Also on Thursday I put up a post called “Numbers & Psychology” that got a lot of comments. I had heard an National Public Radio story about how home buyers respond differently to non-rounded-off asking prices as opposed to rounded-off figures (e.g., $176,942 vs. $175,000). Compared what was said in the report to that phenomenon of weird-looking bet sizes in poker, esp. online. Like I say, a lot of folks came around to share opinions on that one.
Finally, on Friday I shared some “Brief Observations Designed to Accommodate Our Fast-Paced Lifestyles,” one of which was an announcement of a new poker podcast, called The Hard-Boiled Poker Radio Show. No shinola!
More on that this week.
