Don’t do drugs… (Adderall)

There has been talk lately on Poker Road Radio’s Big Poker Sunday about poker players that are using Adderall (a medication used to help people with ADD). Gavin Smith (BEEFY)They are using this prescription drug to maintain focus for extended periods of time. Interestingly enough, a lot of celebrities are using Adderall, not not necessarily for focus, but to lose weight. One of the side effects is weight loss, Paris Hilton and Nicole Ritchie are said to take these things by the fist full. This got me to thinking, could you Imagine what Gavin Smith would look like if he weren’t on Adderall? Dude is beefy…

My schedule is as such with our new baby that I can’t get to the casino 2 days a week anymore. So when I do get a chance I spend 14 hours at the table. Binaural beats for focusObviously I am going to have trouble focusing in these marathon sessions. I started using binaural beats (links to the exact recording to use for focus) to help maintain my focus. I use this recording. As soon as I notice myself losing focus or maybe playing a bit too loosely I put the headphones on and within a minute or two I am focusing again. In fact I become more intensely focused than I was.

As a hypnotist I have worked with a couple of kids that have been diagnosed with ADD, none of which have been on this drug. When working with these kids it was necessary to use binaural beats to induce hypnosis and then work with the underlying beliefs that are creating the behavior. They listen to some music with the tone under it and they drift into a hypnotic state.

A binaural beat consists of 2 tones, one frequency in one ear, say 540 Hz and another frequency in the other ear, say 553 Hz. Your brain then creates an oscillation (13 Hz). Your brain waves then synchronize with the frequency and the brain drifts into the desired state.

To gain greater focus you would induce the Beta (13 Hz – 40 Hz) and Gamma (40 Hz – 50 Hz) frequencies .

I have a bunch of these that I use with my clients and for myself. You can get them with music or ambient noise behind them which is much more pleasant than listening to a plain oscillating tone. I have purchased many of these at brainsync.com where you can download the mp3 for $10. You can make the tones yourself using something like audacity. Just make sure that when you insert the tones that each one is only audible in one ear, and when you mix it down that you do so in stereo, otherwise you will end up with useless noise.

Peace,

Erik “Blazman”

Welcome to the site.

Nice post.

Doesn’t look like Mike is suffering from any side effects :)

Welcome, Blazman! I, too, was reminded of them binaural beats when I listened to Gavin et al. discussing Adderall. Gonna have to try that again.

Listening to binaural beats, that is. (Not tryin’ the drugs lol.)
