Day 3 of WSOP week. Observing on Mt. Hopkins

You know, when you are observing, there’s not that much to do. You sit around the computer, analyze data and enjoy the beautiful view. Then again, time flies by so quickly, you wake up at 1pm, still groggy from last night and at 5 you go up again for another night. So between 1 and 2, I did what any poker degenerate would do in a groggy state of mind: Play some HU limit Hold’em online… and lose 190$ (200$ - 10$ bonus). grrr…

There’s really not that much else to tell about the day, except we really observed hard again during the night, as you can see in that picture of my colleagues (no, I’m not on there). So yeah, that’s what the observer’s room looks like. Nothing special, just a bunch of computers with millions of screens.

One thing we did do on the mountain was go look for a geocache. Geocaching is my second hobby and I love to do it while on travel. I’ve done some in Red Rock Canyon in Las Vegas, for example. Anyway, for those who don’t know, it’s a treasure hunt with your GPS. The treasures are typically ammo boxes (like the one pictured below) or tupperware and it sometimes involves a hike (it used to be much more associated with hiking but urban geacaching has taken over somewhat). The treasure is filled with little trinkets like McToys and to get something you have to leave something.

So I enticed my collaborator Susan to look for this geocache and immediately she loved it and we spent the next few hours in between exposures looking at the geocaching website. Anyway, sorry for the short post. I just travelled 500 miles to Vegas and immediately lost a grand at the 20/40 game at the WSOP (I’ll write about it tomorrow), so I’m kinda tired and not in the mood to write a lot more.
CU tomorrow.
