Charlie and the Chocolate Factory
Charlie Here…so I can relate. Have you ever won the lottery….this is how I feel right now…let me explain.
For those of us that our Rounders listeners, been to bigpoker.ca or now TwoplusTwo podcast listeners…some exciting news.
The radio show has been hyping a contest to take a silver or bronze level player to the SUPERNOVA status.
First, Supernova for those of you that don’t know – is Pokerstars highest level VIP rewards program. You have to play an awful lot and at very high stakes in order to qualify for some amazing prizes and rakeback rewards. It is pretty exciting if you can get there. I guess they send you a Porsche in the mail every month, Big Screens for every room in your house and have a fantasy conceirge service where you can order anything you want – kinda crazy. All in all pretty good stuff I guess if you play at those levels – the rewards have to be good.
It’s almost a surreal experience reading about guys like Tom “Durrr” Dwan and Patrick Antonious splash around with 100k a hand, but they do end up driving the porshe away so can’t be all bad. Some of the VIP blogs are pretty insane. Let’s just say its a fantasy world.
So back to the story at hand. The radio show has a application process where you have to convince Adam and Mike – that you have what it takes to be this potential Eliza Doolittle…or more like Billy Ray Valentine from Trading places and in this case Adam and Mike are Mortimer and Randolf – the rich dudes who promise to take you on this ride. Enter little old me as Billy Ray.
To say I’d be the ideal candidate is an understatement. I know people are passionate about poker – that much I’ve learned especially here on this forum – but I would like to think that I have an addiction when it comes to learning about poker. I am obsessed with finding the path to victory…but not willing to risk every paycheck on winning or losing.
I have great results – I can go deep – and also have had some solid runs of finishing dead last. While I am a good student I might be a terrible learner. I understand what your talking about, I can relate to the lesson given – but can also proceed to play the opposite of what I just learned. I am a donkey.
So I would say I am the everyman of poker. The guy that deposits $100.00 every few months to make his poker addiction last. Recently I have fared better – the result of some good video’s teaching me the way. My SNG results are up, my MTT’s are getting more consistent. My cash game has suffered as I have spent so much time in the SNG mind set….but overall a meteoric rise through the poker ranks is definitely possible.
In a nut shell, emphasis on NUT – I wrote my case out to Adam and Mike and lets say my Jaw hit the floor when I heard that they selected me as their first candidate. I think it might have something to do with Adam getting sick of my emails. I was persistent, to the point, and hammered home that I was willing to take the full time plunge.
When I heard my name on the Pokercast – I jumped over the moon and back. How exciting is that. Maybe my emails hit home, but I was as they say “the perfect candidate”. “He’s the guy, he’s the guy”…said Mike. Truer words have not been spoken. And I am PUMPED. First I tried to call my long time poker “brother” but he was asleep….typical. Then I woke my wife, who mumbled something about Divorce – so then I told my dog. The dog wasn’t that excited. I cracked open a Molson’s Canadian and just let it soak in.
What does it all entail, not really sure. For one – my hands will be scrutinzed by some pretty solid poker authors and coaches so time to step up there. Two will be a few radio spots, I love the mic so no problems there. Three will be lots of solid coaching by world class authors and teachers of the game – and for that – I can’t tell you how excited I am. Imagine David Sklansky discussing pot odds with you, pretty intimidating. Harrington discussing your moves…wow. And finally Winning tons of money – or playing at high stakes is going to be a challenge, but one I look forward to. Can I get to SuperNova Status. We’ll here is a snap shot of what that takes. 20 hours of SNG play – 4 tables at a time – $50.00 per table a week. 20 MTT’s a week with a $100.00 buy in. And then some ring games to go with that, like $20-$40 NL holdem. Thats some serious stakes…but that is SuperNova.
Finally, I always believe that if money is your motivation at whatever you do – then you got problems. It has to be about passion, about loving the situation your in, loving being there, working at it. The intrinsic rewards that go with work.
I would love to make poker my full time job. I would love if I could take care of everything I need to take care of, and trust me that number is growing rapidily.
In the end, its something that I really needed right now. A huge reward for sloughing away at Poker these last few years. I’ll be blogging about my experiences here. I won’t forget you all…lol…on my ride to the WSOP. In fact if I make it there, I’ll blog daily here and hope a few of you make it out to rail me.
My new motto is “Cinderalla never looked so Big”…lol. So look out online world, Bigbamboom is coming.
Thanks to Pokerstars, Mike and Adam (Fellow Canadians) and Two Plus Two…let the ride begin…I want to get off the dead end street and on to the SuperNova Highway….foot is on the gas – lets go.

Congrats & good luck, man! Don’t let that Willy Wonka freak u out — he’s just kidding around and/or testing you when he does that weird stuff.
Congrats! That is awesome! Stepping up to high stakes will be a leap! But that is where the action has to happen. I know a guy who tried to hit SuperNova and fell short and dug himself a pretty big hole. So my question is, where are you getting the bankroll to make this run happen?
Wow, great news! Look forward to hearing about it!
The wife I can understand, but I’m surprised your dog wasn’t more excited for you.

That is pretty cool, should make for some good posts later. Keep us updated, good luck!
