“Cash Plays” Worth a Listen

People listen to poker podcasts for various reasons. Some prefer the strategy-theory-type shows. I like those, though I often enjoy the less heady ones, too. Generally when poker podcasters talk strategy they focus on NLHE and/or tourneys. As it happens, NLHE is my least preferred game, and probably 90-95% of my play is cash games.

Still, I sometimes like listening to the discussions on those shows. One that I’m really starting to enjoy is Bart Hanson’s new one over on PokerRoad Radio called “Cash Plays.” He focuses on Hold ’em, though will discuss other games, too. And it’s all ring games; no tourneys. Good stuff.

Took me a while to give Hanson’s show a try, but I have been impressed. Finally checked it out after reading a recommendation from cmitch (O-Poker) of the 3/31/08 episode, an interview with online legend Niman “Samoleus” Kenkre. (I think I have that spelled correctly.) That would be a good place to start with the podcast. Samoleus is a good thinker and very good at articulating his ideas about the game. Hanson isn’t bad, either. Together they present a genuinely smart & thoughtful dialogue about numerous aspects of deep-stacked cash game play.

On the 4/7 show, Hanson talks some PLO and PLO/8 (as well as HE). On the 4/15 show, he talks a bit about tax issues & then goes through an interesting example of Structured Hand Analysis (à la Harrington).

Like I say, a cool podcast that I think is worth checking out.

Oh, and for some trivia: I knew I recognized the theme song. Finally pegged it. It is from Goblin’s soundtrack to Dario Argento’s creepy Tenebrae.

(Decided to stop with the weekly Hard-Boiled Poker synopses over here, by the way. Hadn’t noticed too many clicking through on those, so I’m trusting no one’ll miss ’em too much.)

I already have an RSS feed on your blog, so yeah, I didn’t click through your posts here.

I am quite hesitant to give “cash plays” a try, because often Hansen’s analysis was flawed on Poker Road. Maybe not flawed, but he always talked about hands which were either bad beats or where he was tilted. The hand analysis they gave at Poker Road most of the time made me cringe. I know that often it had to do with the fact that I play LIMIT Hold’em cash games… Maybe I’ll give Cash Plays a try…

Yea, start with that Samoleus show (3/31) — definitely some good stuff there. Actually, I’d be interested to hear what you thought of the Structured Hand Analysis stuff (from the 4/15 show). Dunno how good the argument is there, but he does explain everything esp. clearly (or so I thought).

Yeah, I like listening to this show. Bart Hansen is a smart dude – although at times I disagree with his analysis, what he says is always pretty well thought out and you can definitely learn the process to thinking about hands if nothing else.
