Back from LA
I mentioned in my previous post that my life was changing dramatically sooner than later. I didn’t realize that this meant actually… now. I went to LA to interview for a new job and find an apartment. I’m moving from Florida after a year and a half. I had been relocated to FL for a job. Luckily, I did leave myself an exit “plan” when I came here: Give it 2 years and if it’s not working start thinking about other options and use tax return money to move. I try to think of my life as a series of poker moves. My strategy here was that I was sensing things were not going well for the company in FL so I needed to start earlier and try to get ahead of the vibe in the office.
Well, I came back from LA to find out I didn’t have any other choices. The job I had given up my coveted over-priced apartment in Hell’s Kitchen, NYC for decided to sell to a larger company and downsize. I was laid off today with severance and unemployment. That’s never happened to me before. I was actually happy though. I had prepared. I had a new apt in LA lined up and a potential better job… and with plenty of other design jobs in LA if that didn’t work out. I also got the severance package I almost forfeited by giving 2 weeks notice.
I’m going to enjoy my time off. I plan on playing poker (cash games), work on my own design projects, and work out. I need this time. I’m a bit of a work-a-holic even though I hate working. (I’m tortured that way). I didn’t take anytime off in the last 6 years since I graduated. Not even right after college.
I’ll be playing tomorrow. Probably at the Dog Track, Derby, in St Pete or maybe at the Hard Rock if I feel like driving. So my perspective will be from an unemployed designer.. haha. I just like saying it sometimes.
Unfortunately, I didn’t get to play at the casinos in LA. There was no time. I only had about 48hrs to interview for 2 jobs and find an apartment. We were exhausted. I kept telling myself there’ll be plenty of time. We’re moving in 2 weeks….
Oh, and no more Full Tilt. It’s pure evil.

I had so much fun in LA. Oh to be single and living in LA. If only I had been a poker player back in 2000. I may have never left.
