Antonio is Busto? Dealing with Variance and Anxiety

In case you don’t read the NVG forums on 2+2 (and you’re probably a better person if you don’t), there is a post in there about a comment Antonio Esfandiari said on the latest ep of Poker After Dark. The clip (Go to the 9:45 mark if you’re interested) details Antonio telling Mike Matusow he used his last $20k on the buyin for the show and he is now busto.

Not sure if it is true or not, but if it from a very selfish standpoint, it makes me feel a little less anxious about my own situation.  I am constantly worrying about going broke, and if a great player like Antonio can go broke, then I’ll just leave it to the poker gods and consider my fate out of my hands.  He played pretty nitty on High Stakes Poker, but his reads were generally spot-on and he seems like a pretty talented player.

Since moving to Vegas, I have been witnessing some of the craziest swings of my poker career.  I jumped into a $5/10 NL last weekend after seeing two drunk European guys asking the floorman at the Wynn for “the highest game you have,” then laughing, shrugging, and yanking out wads of hundreds when the floorman told them it was only $5/10.  One played okay, the other went through 5 buyins ($5000) in the hour I was seated.  Unfortunately, the only hand he won was when he stacked me on a bad beat (i’ll spare you the details).

I went from a -$750 swing on that day to +$850 the next day when I grinded $2/5 for 10 hours.  The next two days, I saw my stack during my sessions fluctuate between +$1000 to -$400, ending both days with what seemed like losing sessions after eking out small (<200) wins.  I feel like my insides are being wrung - players are definitely worse in Vegas, which means higher variance and hopefully, bigger scores.  Too bad you can’t pay rent in Sklansky bucks…
