A Story About Working on Easter

Last night at a casino outside of Chicago, I was talking to this mild mannered playground salesman that I know pretty well. He is a regular in the $2/$5 no limit game. I knew this gentleman was Catholic, so I wasn’t surprised when asked me how my Easter was. “It was great,” I told him, “I went the the park, made a nice meal for myself, and then went to the casino to play some cards.”

Then he asked me where my husband was that day, and I told him that he was working. My husband is an attorney. He was starting a month long trial on Monday, so he had a lot to get done on Easter.

After that, my casino friend launched into this diatribe about how my husband needs to get a new job because people shouldn’t work on holidays, especially Easter. Then he started on how messed up society is, and after listening to him for a good while (and noting to myself that I happily worked on Easter), I said, “Well, I agree with you that it stinks that he had to work on Easter, but most attorneys who work at big firms know that they’ll have to work long hours when they sign on, and they get compensated pretty well for being willing to work those long hours. We’re paying off our student loans and saving up to have kids. During this part of our lives, we feel like the sacrifice is worth it. Plus, Easter doesn’t really matter to him anyway, since he’s not religious. He usually just participates in Christian activities because they matter to me.”

Then it got quiet, and this sweet guy who always shares his candy with me, leaned across the table, looked me right in the eyes, and said, “Your husband is Damned. You need to save his soul.”

Surprising to hear that while sitting at a poker table at 2 a.m. in a raggedy boat casino.

LOL, that is funny, you should tell him that anyone believes that Mary was impregnated by the “holy spirit” and that some dude was killed and then woke from the dead 3 days later is completely delusional and needs a head check.
