you know you’ve been at the casino way too long when…

This is a view of the sunrise at 6 a.m. along Lakeshore drive in Chicago. I shot this on the way home from a 14 hour session. Sunrises over the lake make for gorgeous commutes, but they’re also a sign that I’ve been at the boats waaaaaaaay too long.
I’ve always been more of a tournament player, but this year I’ve been playing a lot of cash at the boats in Indiana. The heartland poker tour is making a stop here this weekend, and I have cashed in the last two tournaments they’ve had at Majestic Star, but this time around the action was just SO good I couldn’t pull myself away from the $2/$5 tables to play the qualifiers. I worry a bit about how all this cash will affect my tournament game, but for the time being it feels really great to know that my cash skills are finally up to snuff.
In other news…I’ve been running really really bad in my homegame. I’ve been happy with my play, but we have three yahoos in our game that have been rivering me like you wouldn’t believe. I’m down about $4,500 in that game just since the beginning of the year, which isn’t that gigantic of a number, considering how high we play, but it is still big enough to make me shudder a bit, since I’m used to making a killing in that game. Just to give you an example of how things are going…
I have Qd K Kd 10 in $5/$5 PLO. The flop comes Ad J 10d. Perfect board, right? I jam the pot, and one of these three yahoos calls me, along with a couple of others that I think either have sets or broadway without a redraw. The turn comes a black 9. Great card. Now the yahoo might have made a lower straight and pay me off. The rest of the callers are still in though, so I know if the board pairs I am dead in the water. The river is the 9 of hearts. I check. He shoves. Everyone else folds. I muck my hand face up into the pile. He laughs and turns over 9935. Runner, Runner, Quads. Unreal. That’s been my year there in a nutshell.
