General Poker Articles

I want to, but…

I want to do this professionally. I know I can. I know I won’t get bored. I know I can be successful. I have been playing and playing and playing and my statistics say I can beat this thing. If I approach it professionally, I can beat the hell out of it and I would spend many, many more hours doing what I love.

BUT

am I throwing my “former” life away?

All about Poker Affiliates

First things first.  Many, many users believe Full Tilt needs to change it’s affiliate policies. If you are one of them, please visit Onlinepetition.com, and sign the petition asking them to do so.

Now, more about affiliates than you probably ever wanted to know…

A poker affiliate is a company or person that receives a commission for sending new players to the poker sites that they work for.  For the most part, affiliates attract new players through online marketing efforts.  Their commission can either come as a one-time up-front payment or a percentage of the action the player gives the site for as long as they have an account.

High Stakes Poker back on television

Just got back into the only poker television show worth watching. This season has been referred to as “the Tom Dwan show” and it certainly appears that way from watching an hour and a half or so. It’s hard to know how many tedious hands they edit out where somebody opens and everyone else folds, and unlike televised tournaments they don’t give live chips counts so you can’t even tell who’s up.

I’m a little curious about Daniel Negreanu’s play, he does some strangely fishy things like open-limping the button. I’m sure there is a good reason for this – he seems to tinker with his style pretty regularly so I suppose limping is just a randomizing strategy against very good players.

A Release

I’ve returned from a Vegas weekend.  We decided to extend the weekend by 1 day.  It was nice not having anywhere else to be.  This was definitely a trip for celebrating and releasing.  I found myself start to get a bit frustrated when I thought about losing my job.  It never got to the point.. why me?  I don’t question my abilities.  I knew why my number came up and it didn’t have anything to do with my work.

PLO Tourneys

There hasn’t been much written on PLO tournament strategy.  Trust me, I’ve looked.  So, I’ve been doing some strategizing on my own, which has made me realize how much harder players had it before Super Systems and Card Runners.

This past weekend, I played twelve hours to cash for a whopping $150 profit in the Venetian PLO event, but it was worth it because I managed to figure a few things out.

1.  If the tournament is structured like a typical hold’em tourney or stacks aren’t deep enough (you should get substantially more starting chips in a PLO tournament than in a hold’em event) then you pretty much have to win your first pot to have a decent chance at going deep.

patience, patience and more patience

I have made my return to live poker after 2 solid months off.. My first session back was not so good. Had my Aces cracked by a 5-7 when my opponent rivered 2 pair. Very painful and I even joked with him that I was going to beat him up in the parking lot.. (but really, for that, I should have).  Well the other night I decided to play at Commerce – there definitely was craziness with the LAPC wrapping up later this week.  It was very loud in there.

Starting at the bottom

Hello All,

Not sure how many dedicated Pokersifters are left, but sometimes its worth checking back in. For those that need an update and back ground – here it is….

Pot Limit Omaha in San Diego

As I previously mentioned, I recently moved to San Diego from Chicago.  I am just playing Pot Limit Omaha (or mixed games that include PLO) for the time being, and live games are not surprisingly hard to find.  I hear that there is a regular $10/$25 game at the Palomar, which is just up the street from me. Unfortunately, that’s just a tad out of my range, okay, a lot out of my range, but man, would I love to play in that game someday. I catch myself daydreaming about fairy-god-backers every time I drive by.

Bellatrix’ 2008 poker

So the year is ending… I should be working, but can’t come up with the motivation of running a single simulation or analysis, so I’ll write about the year that was 2008 instead for me in poker.

It was a good year. I gotta remind myself of that. I dropped over 2000$ in just the last 3 days of playing online (mostly tilt issues, which bugs me even more). I learned what it takes to win. I learned to be patient. I had fun again. I felt my heart racing again while learning new games, whereas 6max LHE has become robotic. I learned to approach the whole thing very professionally.

1 Year Later and 2009 Goals

My first post to this blog was December 22nd 2007.  So much has happened since then. I was living 3000 miles from where I am now.  When I was playing poker in Florida I had become accustom to the players and games in the Tampa Bay Area.  I had some struggles at first but then began beating the games I was playing.  I grew a lot as a player in 2007.
