So as I mentioned in a previous post, I was heading to Vegas for a week to play in the WSOP. Well things didn’t go according to plans and that was a very good thing. My buddy and I and our significant others who were with us for the weekend had dinner plans at Lavo in the Palazzo on Saturday night. Before dinner my buddy and I decided to try a $80 satellite at the Venetian for entry into a $340 Deep stack event that Monday. Top 2 got seats and I was one of them after being shortstack and hitting a miracle turn card with 4 left when my KK ran into A5 all in pre flop and the board came 553 bu the turn came a miracle K. I win my seat, chop the last longer and go and play Monday. We start with 12k in chips and 40 min levels. I am up to about 17k when the following hands happens during the 2nd level. I open UTG with AA to 650 (blinds 100/200). BB raises me to 2100 and I make it 7k to go. He goes all in and I call and he has KK. Flop comes K high and I hit a the miracle case ace on the river. Same dealer who dealt me my KK inthe satty…this felt like destiny to me. From their I play pretty much solid poker and keep getting big hand after big hand. At dinner break I was about 35-40K after taking some hits though. However, by the end of the night I have 635,000 in chips and in 2nd place with 39 left. Going into day 2 I was feeling really at ease and confident. On the 2nd hand of the day I win over a 300K pot (AK vs 1010 and my 10′s hold up) and am almost at a million in chips. I now enter the final table 3rd in chips and guaranteed over 4K. We are now 4 handed and I am last in chips. I ask the tournament director for chop amounts based on chip equity. He runs the numbers and 4th was worth 26k while first was 50k. If we played it out 1st gets 64k. The chip leader was a young kid who had about 50% of the chips in play. He states that he will not accept anything below $60k. After the TD and the rest of tell him what a deal he is getting, he still refuses and we play 4 handed for about 1.5 hours. At that point I am third in chips and the young kid is severe shortstack after doubling up almost all the players. I am then dealt KK in the BB and raise the chip leader who opened on the button. I have about $1.8 million and he makes it 275k to go. I make it about 850k and he pushes all in and I snap call. He has AJ and a Ace hits the flop and I am going home in 4th place. The kid finished 3rd for just over 18k. He cost me at minimum $10k and himself $32k. What a greedy donkey. The 2 guys left chopped up 1st and 2nd since they were close in chips for $48k apiece. I can’t complain too much since I ran like God pretty much (39 pocket pairs in 2 days) and outlasted 815 players. My biggest score by far ever amd just in time as I need to pay some debt down and help with a down payment on a house.

My profile is all screwed as they added my results to a different Christopher Stewart. Trying to get that fixed and moved to Chris Stewart which they have my other cashes under.

Wednesday was Golf and Nobu and cash games at MGM which are just awful. Finally made it to he Rio on Thursday and played 10/20 limit game Bellatrix was talking about. Very juicy but couldn’t get anything going and lost 1 buy-in.

Well it turned out to be my best trip ever. Up next is hopefully the AZ State Championships in August and hopefully the next dreamteam poker event later this year.

Hello PokerSifters out there! I have been practically non-existent the past year due to an intense masters program I was in. Last week I graduated with my MS in Information Management and am excited to be able to get back to a normal life with my nights free to watch TV and play some poker. Over the past year, pretty much the only poker I played was the WSOP Circuit event at Rincon this past March. I played 2 tournaments, one NLH and one O8. I sorta bubbled the NLH tournament busting 39th when 27 got paid. I’ve played a few sessions of limit cash games with slight losing results.

Now it’s time for the WSOP. I will be going out from June 12th to June 19th. My goal is to play the $1500 horse event on the 14th and maybe the $2k event on the 18th. Of course going to try and satellite my way in but I have had good results in the past with WSOP satellites (way soft) so I expect to play in at least one of the events (probably the 2k since I’m pretty much dead money in the $1500 horse). My preference would be the horse event as that is my favorite game. I am tired of NLH and prefer the limit mixed games but my best game is NLH and I need to make money so I’ll probably end up just playing that. Well nothing new to really talk about besides that. If any of you plan on being out in Sin City during the 12th-19th, let me know and we can meet up. Be nice to put some faces to the names.

I was eagerly awaiting this show because I love it when they show something other than No Limit Holdem and I wanted to see this star-studded packed final table. Also, horse is an amazing game and my favorite form of poker to play. When this final table was happening I had heard about the raucous atmosphere going on but what I saw on ESPN blew me away and shocked me.

The final table consisted of some of the legends of poker. Barry Greenstein, Lyle Berman, Huck Seed, Eric Lindgren and Scotty Nguyen. Also included were great cash game players Matthew Glantz, Michael DeMichele and Patrick Bueno. I was stoked to watch this unfold.

We barely saw Bueno as he busted very early on the show in a razz hand to Lindgren. Next to go was Huck who got beat in a stud 8 hand by DeMichele. Then we lost Greenstein who got a nasty slow-roll by Scotty Nguyen. This was only an inkling to come. We then lost Lyle Berman in 5th to DeMichele who won a nice pot against him and Scotty in razz. This was after Scotty was acting very strange in a hand against Lyle earlier that appeared to cripple Lyle but who knows when they edit this stuff. Then the highly underrated Glantz departed in 4th in a O8 hand to Scotty.

This is when things started getting really out of hand and really who is to blame for this besides Scotty, none other than Harrah’s and the tournament directors working the final table. Scotty was acting abusive, drunk, belligerent and unsportsmanlike to both players especially DeMichele who he seemed to take a serious exception to his “celebrating” some hands he won earlier. DeMichele repeatedly apologized and said he meant no disrespect and that he won’t do it again and he kept his promise but for some reason this didn’t sit well with Scotty. He cursed at him, goaded him repeatedly, lied about his hands trying to induce calls and was just a jerk. Harrah’s needed to do something but because it was Scotty they didn’t and that is a shame. I’m not sure what could have been done but they really should have at least assessed him a penalty and maybe even kicked him out of the tourney for his behavior. If was a lesser tournament or a not so hi profiled player, they would have been given numerous warnings and penalties. His “friends” (backers) in the audience were just as bad especially Layne Flack who was obviously inebriated himself and acted very poorly. At one point, Lindgren even had to ask the TD to stop Layne from doing what he was doing. I loved it when Eric busted in 3rd and didn’t hi five Layne as he was standing there and then said he “couldn’t beat a drunk and hoped the kid wins.” Scotty went on to best DeMichele after a quick HU battle and took home almost $2 million in cash and a gaudy trophy in honor of Chip Reese.

Overall a lot of people will say this was entertaining and some will even say good for poker but this was a disgrace, a total train wreck and was anything but good for poker. It will only continue to accentuate the negative sterotypes the general public has of poker and the people who play the game. The so called “Ambassador of Poker” and “Prince of Poker” Scotty Nguyen looked pathetic and frankly beat up. Everyone can say what a dark year he has had after his famous collapse with 12 to go in the 2007 WSOP Main Event but that is no excuse for what transpired at that final table. At a time where poker gathered to remember the greatest player ever Chip Reese, Scotty’s antics ruined the moment and sadly stole the show. Nobody will talk about Reese or the quality of poker played, just Scotty and that is the last thing poker needs. Scotty has had a history of dealer abuse and verbal assaults on other players but since this renaissance in TV poker, the american public hasn’t seen this. They have only seen the “yeah baby” and gregarious Scotty and for the most part I’m sure he is like this but a dark truer picture of the man emerged and only time will tell if his reputation and image can rebound. I’m sure it will as the poker world and American public have forgiven much worse.

Lastly, I do want to say that I was glad ESPN didn’t do fancy editing to make Scotty look good and showed it how it was…my only request is to show more than 2 hours of this event like they did last year.

Ok so the title may be a little dramatic but what I experienced tonight will haunt me for some time. It has been a long time since I posted. I have had little time for poker due to grad school which started in June. I’ve deposited a few times on Star’s for the sole purpose of trying to get a seat in the LAPT event at Uruguay. This event has been my focus for the past few weeks but with no luck playing in some $8.80 rebuys. This was the only LAPT event I tried for because it fits my school schedule the best. So yesterday, I played a Sunday million $8.80 6 max double shootout with one $215 seat guaranteed. I won that seat, unregistered from the Sunday mill (won a 2nd DS and played in massive Sunday mill tourney but busted in less than an hour when I ran QQ into KK) and registered for the Sunday $215 LAPTLa Punta de Este event. 1 seat guaranteed and for every 5k in the prize pool another seat guaranteed. Well we ended up getting 52 players which was enough for 2 seat plus 3rd and 4th getting some cash.

Through the first 3 hours I played great super tight poker and entered the final table 5th in chips around 29k. Below the FT standings

I don’t know how to have played this hand besides pushing all in preflop. Blinds were still small at 1k/2k and I wanted value. I knew I was good on the flop (he did have a lot of outs). Not upset as much of his flop call but his preflop call was horrible especially since the whole time and we had played together for over 3hours, I had shown nothing but big hands. I played so tight, here are my stats…he had no business calling my raise but hey that is poker. I’ll be back I’m sure but this one will sting for a while. Thanks to bigheeb91, fashun/wagun, and ilikebirds for railing me!!

- 35 times out of 94 while in big blind (37%)
- 34 times out of 277 in other positions (12%)
- a total of 99 times out of 465 (21%)

So finally able to blog about something that has intrigued and annoyed me since last Sunday. I finally redeposited after a few months layoff on Stars and decided to play the $10+1 15k guaranteed tournament. They ended up getting 3364 players for a prize pool over $33K. I ended up playing for over 4.5 hours and busted out 20th for a whopping $74.01 for a $63.01 profit. Now the issue I have is that first place was slightly over $4.6K. Now this seems awful small for a 33k prize pool…just over 14% was set aside for first. I thought my payout for 20th place was small also.

I decided to check a few other tourneys on stars and noticed the Sunday mill offered the same prize payouts for 1st but other tourney’s ranged between 19% to over 21% which seems much more normal to me. Do guaranteed tournaments have a different payout schedule than non-gtd tourneys? Do others think 14% is small…anyone know how others sites compare? I swear Party used to be much higher.

What was speculated a few weeks ago is now official, ESPN and Harrah’s Caesar’s will delay the final table till November 9th, almost 4 months after it is played down to the final table. This is bad for poker in my opinion but probably a boon for ESPN and Caesars.

They will play down from 9 to 2 on the 9th and then the HU finale will be played in the evening of the 10th and it will air on the 11th but they are only doing a normal 2 hour show. You would think they can do more than 2 hours…hopefully that will change. Not sure if they will do the PPV like they have done the last 2 years.
